In one word – Vegan
Food – Don’t be alarmed by what I’m about to say: Karyn’s Cooked is a vegan restaurant. And despite that, this carnivore keeps going back. Basically, KC has mastered the art of vegan cuisine to the point where a meat eater feels that their seitan-based meatloaf is no different than mom’s recipe. If the special is any kind of soul food – collared greens, corn bread, etc…go for it. You won’t be disappointed. You may however be disappointed by KC’s desserts. There is something to be said of adding butter and eggs to cake.
Drink – Reasonable wine list and a good Izze selection (a sweet carbonated drink).
Service – The staff knows about the food and can advise accordingly, which is particularly helpful if you are unfamiliar with a vegan menu.
Occasion – Want to have a quiet dinner with a friend you need to catch up with? Come here.
Dress – Your jeans and heels uniform will be just fine. I’d avoid the sweatsuit ensemble though.
Cost – Entrees will take you to the $10 – 12 range. All in all, bang for your buck.
If you like…, try – Blind Faith Café, Chicago Diner
